Final Assignment 2.0

Image
As I mentioned in the previous post, the task this time is to make use of the unused space and endow it with new functions.    Inspired by the stray animals in the school, we decided to create a space that integrates reading(for human), leisure(for both human and cat)  and entertainment(for cat). The target population of this project is the school cat, passing students or teachers, and school staff (such as the cleaning staff inside the teaching building). In the choice of roof material, we chose tarpaulin, which made our space lighter in volume (compared to the wooden roof we originally planned to use). We chose wood and cardboard as construction materials. In the production process for this assignment, I and another team member are tasked with making cat houses. Depending on the size of the cat and the size of the cat (the smallest distance to walk and can pass), we designed a series of cat doors and windows to provide ventilation and light. Here are some photos.

Yuan Architecture

Retrieved from: https://zhuanlan.zhihu.com/p/556537513 The Yuan Dynasty was the first ethnic minority government to settle in the Central Plains. Its architectural style was unique, but the economic and cultural development of this period was slow (because of the huge damage caused by the war, the production was sluggish, and the building of houses was only for the sake of speed and economy. The aesthetic problems of foreign rulers) architectural development is also basically in a state of depression(Watt, 2010) . The regime of the Yuan Dynasty lasted less than a hundred years, and the development of various industries was slow, as was the construction industry. Therefore, most of the buildings in the Yuan Dynasty inherited the style characteristics of the Song and Jin Dynasties. The official architecture of the Yuan Dynasty continued to develop and progress on the basis of inheriting the architecture of the Song and Jin Dynasties(Qu,2018) , and became more rigorous and standardize...

Song Architecture

The style of writing in the Song Dynasty was prosperous, and its aesthetics was different from the majestic and luxurious in the prosperous Tang Dynasty. The buildings in the Song Dynasty were more delicate and beautiful, and focused on decoration. Retrieved from: http://www.sdhtjckj.com/news/472.html Song Dynasty architecture has the following characteristics: 1. Reduction of building scale Whether it is Tokyo(Dongjin), the capital of the Northern Song Dynasty, or Lin'an, the capital of the Southern Song Dynasty, the scale of its cities and palaces is far smaller than that of Chang'an in the Tang Dynasty ( Liu & Wu,2015) . Although this kind of architectural layout was related to the poor and weak national power at that time, it was mainly influenced by the Neo-Confucianism at that time. Neo-Confucianism advocated "preserving the principles of nature and eliminating human desires". The characteristics of "introduction", "introversion" and ...

Tang Architecture

Both cities have huge palaces, government offices and temples( Steinhardt, 2004) . 2. After determining the bay and depth according to the hierarchical system, the craftsman in charge of the design calculated the size of each component, and then the carpenter began to enter into the programmed operation. Sui Architecture

The architecture of the Sui Dynasty is a transitional period in which traditional Chinese architecture tends to mature. The two capitals of the Sui Dynasty, Chang'an and Luoyang, were fully planned and large in scale, absorbing the advanced architectural technology of the south and combining the rough elements of the north(Xiong, 2006). Sui Dynasty architecture has the following characteristics: 1. Rigorous Planning The palaces of the Su...

Final Assignment 1.0 : Big Place, Small Space

Image
This week's mission is to find a small place and transform it so that wasted space can be used more efficiently. In the choice of location, our group had many differences. After discussion, we finally chose a dead-end road located outside the teaching building. The reason we chose it is that it is surrounded by a lot of traffic, but this space is completely unused. While thinking about the functions it can have, under the guidance of the professor, we have gradually realized other parts that we have neglected, such as the possible impact of the transformation of this land on the nearby (not only beneficial impacts, but also may have a negative impact). Next week, we'll be designing a roof. In this week's task, I was responsible for drawing two elevations. In the process of drawing the space, I had a deeper understanding of the space, and in the process of discussing with my classmates, I also learned a lot of skills and skills that I didn't know before, which has benef...

Han Architecture

Retrieved from: https://www.sohu.com/a/346040109_291647  The architecture of the Han Dynasty completely possessed the embryonic form of ancient Chinese architecture in terms of steps, structures, and carvings. The following will briefly introduce the most representative details, namely the structure of the bucket arch and the end of the eaves(Yang, n.d). 1. Bucket Arch The real objects of Han Dougong are found in cliff tombs, stone gates and stone chambers.  There are many brackets on the octagonal pillars in the tomb of Pengshan Ya Tomb( Fenghua et al., 2022). On the capital of the stigma, there is a dou (that is, a big dou), on which an arch is placed, and a loose dou is placed at each end; above the center of the arch, a small square is formed, like a square head.  There may be a plate under the bucket, which was not seen after the Tang Dynasty, but it can still be seen in the Yungang Grottoes and in the real objects of the Asuka period in Japan.  There are t...

Group Assignment: Bathroom Design

Image
In this week, I participated in a design assignment as a group, which was a novel experience - this is the first time I have participated in a multi-person collaborative design project. First of all, my partner and I designed the logo and block of the drawing. As a person who has never touched block design, this is a huge challenge, so I found some examples from the website, and analyzed the merits of each example typography. In the logo design, we adopted the old English font, which made our logo letter: EI (the same letter of everyone's name) more design sense and cultural heritage. This also reflects our design philosophy: a design that respects culture and tradition. In the drawing of each drawing (plan, section, elevation), I am responsible for drawing the prototype of the design, while my partner is responsible for the completion and details (based on our personality and different styles). This kind of cooperation has greatly shortened our drawing time. At the same time...

Qin Architecture

Retrieved from: https://k.sina.cn/article_7412868483_1b9d7658300100xl79.html Qin architecture is characterized by defensive structures and elements that convey authority and power(  Alabiso,1995) . The Qin Dynasty was China's first imperial dynasty, establishing the rough boundaries and basic administrative system that all Chinese dynasties would follow for the next two thousand years.  The Qin Dynasty achieved some of the greatest architectural achievements in ancient Chinese history, largely because they had a large slave labor force composed mainly of peasants and peasants(Steinhardt, 2002). Historically, the Qin Dynasty left behind two monumental architectural remains -- the Great Wall, which actually connected many of the existing short walls, and the first emperor's grand palace, the Epang Palace, and a large mausoleum, the Lishan Mausoleum. The architecture of the Warring States Period prior to the Qin Dynasty had several definite aspects (and continued into the ...

Visit to a Factory

Image
This week, my friends and I went to a nearby plastic factory(a few miles away) to learn and record the process of making plastic.  First of all, I was very interested in wood processing (in order to compare the difference between handmade wooden furniture and factory wooden furniture), so I found a furniture factory on the map. But when we got there, we found that this factory and the factories next to it had been relocated. The residents nearby told us that all the processing plants here had been moved to the suburbs for the sake of ecology. Then my friend suggested a visit to a plastics factory she knew. I got the following program diagram through the field records and sorting out the data. We first went to the first plastics factory in the industrial park, but the staff there told us that their production process was private,  they were not allowed to visit. So we went to a factory next door. Here, each worker is responsible for one process, and although there are man...

A Conversation with a Carpenter

Image
My father used to be a carpenter. Before he got married to my mother, he had been learning carpentry knowledge from the old carpenters in the village. Although he is now an interior designer, he often tells me that the knowledge he gained from studying carpentry is also very helpful for his interior design. He told me that carpenters and architects had very similar roles. They are both coordinators and balancers. When I asked him why he had given up his job as a carpenter, he told me that with the advent of factories, the carpenter's role had become increasingly "awkward" and his wages had fallen sharply as demand dropped. So carpenters, including him, switched careers. From talking to him, I learned I lot and also documented his process of making a handmade wooden table.I realized that in the modern age, the barriers to entry for carpenters have become much lower (the advent of tools has greatly reduced the difficulty). Therefore, hand-made woodwork has gradually become ...

Structure Section Details

Image
This week I learned how to draw wall sections. In the initial drawing, I overlooked the complexity and rationality of the sections. In the process of drawing, I learned about three different materials of walls: wooden walls, brick walls, concrete walls and stucco walls. Each material has its own characteristics and its own different ways of connecting. It was a unique journey -- I had forgotten the details of the sections on almost all my previous studio assignments. This is the first time I came across such a detailed section drawing, I  spent more time drawing them than my classmates.

Pre-Qin Architecture

Since the pre-Qin architecture was too long ago from today and adopted wooden structure( the capital was often built in the south), most of the buildings are difficult to be completely preserved.  However, its significance to Chinese ancient architecture is indeed self-evident -- it initially shows the cultural characteristics of Oriental architecture, and also plays a role in laying the foundation for the planning and construction principles of the later dynasties. "The craftsmen camp the country, nine miles, three gates, nine channels and nine latitudes in the city, the path of nine tracks, the left ancestor and the right, the front and the back of the city, the city dynasty.                                                                                         ...

Chinese Architecture From Qin Dynasty to Qing Dynasty (1.2)

Image
Colors:  Every color has its own and unique meaning and was used carefully in ancient Chinese architecture.  Purple was the most honorable color in ancient China and the reasons can be found in Chinese history  and religion. According to Taoist legend, the celestial Palace of the Jade Emperor was viewed as a star  near Polaris, which was perceived to be in purple color and located at the center of the universe (  Zhang, 2019). During the Ming and Qing dynasties, China's monarchy reached its peak of  centralization and to symbolize the supremacy of their powers, emperors in that era called the palace  they lived as “Purple Forbidden City”. Yellow was another royal color and it represented dignity and  royalty, and is characterized by fidelity ( Zhang,2019) and the tiles in the middle of the palace roof are  yellow. In the palaces of the subordinate countries of ancient China, Cyan (in Chinese called Qing) was  the most commonly use...
